crawfish season

Tuesday 3.29.2011

yum yum yum. It’s officially crawfish season down here in the South! I’ve been badgering my family to make some for the last few weeks, so my sister decided to make some for her birthday this past weekend. There is really no right way to make crawfish, I’ve had them so many ways, but the important thing to always keep in mind when making your crawfish people: heat.

Anyway, we had a couple of our friends over for my sister’s birthday to eat and have a few rounds of poker. I made crab cakes for the first time and some bacon wrapped water chestnuts.Good company, good food, and another excuse to try out my new Canon lens.

A sprinkle of cayenne to give my crab cakes a little punch of flavor and color.

Hungry boys gathered around the food…

These raspberries were especially sweet this time.

A Guide to Making Crawfish:

STEP 1: Preparation is key.

ingredients, check.

spices, check.

beer, check.

STEP 2: Add just the right amount of citrus. ( I love the they way my mom makes them. She throws in a few leaves of grapefruit and lemon leaves)

STEP 3: Boil those babies!

STEP 4: Dig in!

August nights

Sunday 8.29.2010

Surprisingly really enjoyed my low key birthday this year.We stuffed ourselves with Rudy’s BBQ on Friday and grabbed some drinks at Anvil Saturday.  Those mojitos were amazing! Things I never tire of and always love: peanuts with a great cocktail, and dinner with friends. Oh and the boxes of cupcakes and sweets too!

Sending out a birthday wish to my friend Rocio, who shares the same birthday with me tomorrow. Wow, it’s already been a year. Where has the time gone?

It was White Linen Night in the Heights yesterday. Everyone came in their best whites to check out Houston’s vintage scene on 19th Street. I wish I could have stayed a little longer, but I had birthday dinner reservations with the sis and her beau, and free Italian dinner is so tempting. :) Those shiny, rainbow pinata and streamers blowing in the wind by Casa Ramirez had me mesmerized for awhile there.

Chomp chomp. All you can eat at Maggiano’s.  I think we finished four of these creme brulee plates. It was brutal.

dinner for grown ups

Sunday 7.18.2010

Happy birthday to my dear friend Roshan, whom I always love having witty and sarcastic banters with. A mediocre juggler, but you take what you can get these days. We all got together last night for what Kim calls a “grownup dinner” to celebrate the big two four. Mona brought the Bauer cupcakes, and her kind of cute deformed pinkies. The rain came down for a bit, but I liked the feeling of being trapped inside with friends and bucket of Legos. The mint leaves were crushed, lemons squeezed, and not-so-crazy straws ready for the pickin’. It reminded me of this article I read years ago, whose opening line still makes me smile everytime.

“It rained yesterday so the air seems thick. Maybe if one of us jumped we could linger up in it for a moment, held by whatever damp thing is hanging about us, moving through us, grazing a cheek, lifting up a mint leaf out of the ice and over the rim of our short-glass mojitos.”

Chau and BJ’s neighbors own thirty dead bikes and one very important BBQ grill. The two little girls like to stand around in the front yard watching a guy cut down branches from the top of a tree.

I think for the first time in a while, we actually celebrated my birthday on my actual birth date. Having a birthday in late August usually means the beginning of school and tight schedules, but there is something nice about a celebration on your actual birth date. It’s a more official feeling.

We made reservations to meet at the Backstreet Cafe for one of those sit-down dinners that we haven’t had for awhile. The patio was cool thanks to a well placed fan and hovering trees. We chatted and discussed Zelda and bad movies verses good movies and school and jobs and wedding plans among other things that I can’t seem to recall clearly at the moment. It was one of those great dinners that lasted 3 hours into the night. I hung out with friends I hadn’t hung with so often since we parted ways in high school , and it was comfortable and agreeable. I used to be one of those people who had abandonment issues when high school graduation was over and I needed to be assured that the people who signed “Friends-4-Eva” and “K.I.T” in your yearbooks would be the same ones who I’d hang out with forever. And then , the usual college drifting occurred and I couldn’t handle these separations, or, I didn’t know people were allowed to leave me behind. But I think, time has done me very good, and especially now, I feel more at ease with myself more than anything. And it’s still surprising to me when I see these same people who I thought had abandoned me long ago, I find that we fall right back into place where we left off these years. And these are good moments. Good conversations. I appreciate it more.

Clouds as seen from the car window as we drove down 45 and the slow winding traffic. I feel very excited at this moment. Tuan is driving and my anticipation runs high. The clouds look like Spackle texture on a blue wall.

Birds on a canvas….reminds me of Camilo and his Migration, and I hear riots in the streets all over again. The red sunset can blind you if you look at it directly.

Waiting and watching the crowds as Tuan negotiates for her cake pickup. A girl walks into the glass door as she leaves and her friends try not to laugh so hard.

I like the look of vines. It gives a house better character.

Purple flowers from Mona brightens the beginning of a very good night.

One last group photo before we leave the restaurant. I like the way the trees and bushes hover over and surround us like a summer day in Vietnam. I swear, Andrew grows an inch taller everytime I see him in pictures.

Something to look forward to next year, my “golden birthday!” (no pun intended :) )
