I like the way the colors and blurriness of these photo make me feel… like a tangerine dream…like an old Led Zeppelin song…
goodbye Summer! You surely won’t be missed until January when we’ve all have had enough of the sleet and cold temperatures.
hello Autumn… I’m ready for cool breezes and dinners outside on the patio.

a small gathering
Tuesday 7.5.2011

Happy birthday America! Is it bad that we celebrated by eating French cheese? Oh well. I’ve been such an idiot lately. My camera settings were all out of tune so my photos have been overly saturated and pink whenever I take indoor shots. This makes editing them in a pain in the ass and makes everyone look sunburned. Well now I definitely know better.
We had a small gathering to celebrate the big 4. Beer, cheese, crackers, jumbo hot dogs, and some of Chau’s delicious homemade strawberry shortcake. I’ve been completely obsessed over this new blog, Kinfolk. It speaks to the heart of me. A good meal, good conversation, and friends gathered together. I need more of these. I think I’ll plan a dinner soon, I haven’t seen some of my friends in so long.

“Hello summer!!!” I think I’ll go back to sleep, though, it’s too damn hot.
here comes the sun…

bits and pieces from yesterday…
Breakfast date at Waffle House down the street from Tuan’s house. The waitress was really sweet and the hash-browns are delicious! Probably more than the waffles, ironically enough. This art car pulled up soon after we were seated. The kids and passerbys made pit stops to take photos with the car while the owner, a burly, bald guy, drank his coffee nonchalantly with the morning newspaper.
We stopped by Wabash Feed & Antiques in search of some gardening tools and seeds for a Father’s day gift. They have such a variety selection of seeds and goods there, and there are kittens and ducks in the back room!
A little shopping down 19th Street meant stopping by Grace & Co. for some quality antique browsing. The day began with the sky filled with giant fluffy clouds, but by noon, they all dispersed and the sun really beat down on us. We had to stop by MAM’s for a refreshing snowcone to cool down from the staggering heat. So much for antique shopping during the summer in Houston, right? Well, at least I’ll have all day to cool off and chill in the AC today.

AJ needs a machete.

Ohh Summerfest, I am getting too old for this heat. Houston’s third Summerfest had a disappointing lineup this year, so I wasn’t too excited to go, let alone sit on a hard hill and suffer the unforgivable heat. The bands that I was looking forward to see like, Beirut, Chromeo, and Yeasayer did not disappoint. They all sounded amazing live. I think it’s becoming tradition to expect some rain on the second day. I left early this year with promises of some delicious hot noodles at home and water that won’t cost me two bucks.
P.S. I think jorts is the new black this year.

Hello Summer.

The drive down Shepard is lonely.
There are no other cars.
A reunion in fifteen
And then we shall dance it off

Summerfest, part deux.

flower children (via Nancy Lo)

Saturday:
We set up shop on the very top of the hill right in front of the main stage. I came prepared this year. Had my battery powered fan and sunhat ready to enjoy the music with friends gathered on the same blanket. This year, we were treated with explosions of confetti and lights as giant multicolored balloons and a surprise fireworks show littered the sky at night. I was skeptical of having a DJ headliner, but when Girl Talk took the stage along with his minions of wild dancers on stage, the entire hillside became one big happy party. The set ended on a sweet note to John Lennon’s Imagine. The crowd sang, we all danced and bobbed our heads. The fireworks exploded.

Sunday:
It poured. The dirty kids were extra filthy with mud all over their bodies. Some chicks whined, and my pretty pink sandals drenched in mud and grass. A lime snow cone made it better though. Stars came on just as the sun came out again. Torquil Campbell raised his arms towards the sun and exclaimed “There she is!” Amy Millan threw white roses into the crowd. They sang my favorite songs and ended the set with One More Night. I swooned. I heart that song.
Sunset. Bun B walks off the stage with a farewell, “Get ready for the Bubble!” Waiting for it. The orange sets are onstage. The kids stand up. The psychedelic video plays. The band enters the stage through a shiny, bursting, vagina. Wayne Coyne surfs the crowd in his bubble like a giant hamster. He urges us to smoke pot, make animal noises and try to harmonize our way through that Yoshime song. We wave our peace signs and bask in the orange light. The confetti gun keeps shooting.

feeling a cold in summer :(
Monday 8.17.2009
Been feeling horrible the past few days. Somehow, I always manage to get a cold during the summer. It’s probably heat exhaustion since the Summerfest and the constant change in weather. But, I’ve managed to keep preoccupied with some new projects. I picked up several bundles of felt yesterday and started making some flower head pieces for the fall. It’s a lot more satisfying to see everything “bloom” into completion after researching the how to’s online and through books. I’ve got so many ideas and after last night, I’ve been so excited to just come home and start sewing again. Will update some pics later of my creations!
Also picked up some magazines for some late night reading. But that might be another bad idea because I always get inspired to do something afterward. It’s really frustrating not having a large space to go into and start working when you have a brain spurt. Anyway…

I wish I had seen this installation in person. The light quality looks really luminous. I’d like to try this process on one of my TV Stills. I think the spectral quality from the LED lights would really bring the stills back to life. I’ve been playing around with some 3-dimension tweaking here and there to the images, but this might be a more interesting way to see it.

Found these beautiful Mitsumata branches while researching Manzanita ones. I was looking into getting some Manzanita branches for a Thanksgiving centerpiece, but I think I’m going to go with the Mitsumata ones instead. I like the white coloring on it. It’s very clean and modern. You can bend it to your will after soaking them in water. That’s a really cool idea.! I’d like to experiment making a bird cage or a lighting fixture of some sort later on. Check out this guy’s creation here. It looks really simple and easy to do.
