before the gloaming…

… Spending time in the backyard. The cats were pretty excited and anxious to be let out today. Maggie’s eyes were so dilated from all the bird tweeting and chirping from the trees and Joey, who is like an old man with those drooping eyes, laid by the open door until he gathered enough courage to come outside and chase a few birds along the fence.
… I’m still deciding on what to fill my new pots with for the classroom. I love the rawness of these clay pots and this hand painted bowl I managed to nab for five bucks at the Guild Shop will make a better planter.
… The kumquat flowers are ready to bloom and the shrub has grown dramatically this past year. Here’s hoping for a big harvest this year!
… freshly picked cilantro
… picking into the neighbor’s backyard. They’ve been negligent but somehow these roses seem to be thriving without them.

My sister found this tea set at the Guild shop but I had to snatch it from her. I love the minimalistic quality and the smooth texture of the clay. The artist’s signature is scratched into the bottoms of all the cups and teapot.

“don’t move, there’s an owl perched on your head Henry!“
Hello blog, how I’ve missed you.
My computer has been weird for the last few days, but nothing a little reboot and clean up couldn’t fix. Thanks bro. Speaking of cleaning up, I’ve been keeping busy with spring cleaning out my closet. This time around, I decided that it really is time for “out with the old and in with the new.” I cleared out every single piece of clothing that I haven’t touched, worn, looked at in years. Two bags of dresses that I successfully sold at Buffalo Exchange for some sweet cash, and two trash bags full of old t-shirts, old jeans, and jewelry that looks just so juvenile the more I keep them in my case- all these went to Goodwill. I feel refreshed and lighter. My new resolution is to shop sensibly and cut down on impulse buying… Well, I’ll try anyway.
Speaking of shopping, I did treat myself a little after selling all those dresses. Nothing too extravagant, just a few pieces I thought were so endearing. I’ve seen this vintage Avon owl pin before at the Guild Shop, but the green gems were missing in the eye sockets. I finally found a complete one when I came back. My favorite part is that you can open the pin. It’s meant for perfume gloss, but I think I’ll try to place a small picture in there.
An old gold leaf ring I found when I was cleaning out the jewelry box. I think I stole it from my mom’s jewelry box when I was younger.
A suede belt that I’ve been wearing with several outfits lately.
I picked up a few more Rebekah Maysles plates at Anthropologie. There’s a big sale going on! I was sorely tempted, but these will round out my dessert set along with these topography ones I bought several months back.

trifecta

Three very good things:
The Chocolate Store blackberry and raspberry cup display
Guild Shop tea set…with cup lids!! I swooned
A vintage mid-century chair for a reupholstering project…the seat cushion lifts up to reveal a secret storing compartment! It’s like finding pockets in a dress you’re about to buy, always a deal-breaker.

The week leading up to Christmas day really gets me into the holiday spirit. Last minute shopping and the Phamily Christmas tree really begins to fill up with presents. The cats are going crazy and crazier everyday for some odd reason.
The weekend started off really well with dinner with friends at Broken Spoke down on Washington Street. The hole in the wall restaurant is filled with vintage bikes and Belgium knick knacks and a ceiling mural that boasts some fine Victorian collar-wearing gentlemen. The escargots and french fries are so savory and delicious! Definitely going to be back soon. Next day, I had a big shopping spree with my sister since we both had the Saturday off. We stopped by The Guild Shop for some cookies and punch and found these sweet gold cuffs that I’ll be giving away to two of my friends, even though I really really really want it all for myself. I also scored another set of those botanical salad plates so now I have a complete set to use for parties! YAY! To top off the food filled weekend, dinner at Miyagi’s sushi restaurant, which is just a little green room run by Mr. and Mrs. Miyagi. She serves the hot green tea with a cheerful smile while he prepares all the sushi. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten so much sushi in one sitting before.Yum!
Only several more days until Christmas! I’m excited for more food comas to ensue and watching the little cousins devour themselves in wrapping paper and presents.

I love, love, love…

I love love love…
A Mad Hatter’s kind of vase
A set of botanical flower salad plates
A beautiful mushroom coral (definitely my favorite find so far this year)

something for everyone

One of my favorite things about Christmas is being able to wrap all those lovely presents. I know, I am such a nerd. But I love and appreciate every little detail that goes into some of my more personal gifts. This year, my friends and I are doing Secret Santa, but I’ve been picking up a few vintage pieces here and there for the last couple of months that I will be giving away as a token of appreciation for our friendship. Just little things that remind me of each one of them when I saw it. This vintage belt I found at the Guild Shop reminds me of someone who shall remain nameless in case she reads this blog. I love the art deco details in the belt.

Silly Maggie always finds her way into a box if I’m not paying attention. She managed to sneak into this box full of tissue paper next to me while I was busy wrapping all the presents for my younger cousins. She’s smiling!

My sis and I took yet another trip to the Guild Shop. Last time we left empty handed, but we felt pretty lucky this time around. I found some more beautiful Japanese porcelain bowls to add to my collection and a distressed leather belt. My favorite find is this old tackle box which I’m working on to restore as a jewelry display shelf. I love the little compartments for my rings and the tiny silver hooks are ideal for hanging those earrings that I always want to wear but are always all over the place in my room.
