I finally visited the Asia Society for the first time since its opening a couple years back. I’ve always driven by the minimal concrete building with its big green lawn out front and now that I live only two blocks down, there really was no other excuse I could tell myself to delay a visit. The current exhibition involved Tibetan monks constructing a mandala sand painting and visitors were able to contribute to a separate mandala in the conjoining space. I’ve been teaching mandala lessons in my classroom and using images of Tibetan sand paintings as examples to my students, so it was a very cool experience to be able to see one in person and contribute my own little piece of sand in the mandala design.
