back to school blues

recollections

I miss buying school supplies. 😦 I know. I’m such a nerd. But I can be a cool nerd with these Poketo for Target pencil bags! I used to get a new one almost every school year. My favorite one was the plastic Keroppi box with the stackable compartment and matching erasers. Oh man. I would have to save up an arm  and a leg to afford those overpriced Sanrio accessories. I still remember carrying my plastic Pachacco bag around with my little tin Pachacco pencil case and plastic Hello Kitty wallet. Yeahhh, I’m surprised I never got beat up for such a pencil box geek.  I wonder if they still make those musical pencil cases anymore. The ones you can grab at the dollar store and it has a little piano keyboard on the plastic lid. I used to have a yellow one. Gonna check out the dollar store tomorrow and find out. Seeing my little cousin fret over what to bring or what color her Jansport backpack should be and whether or not her friends will have the same lunch hour with  her on her first day of high school makes me nostalgic.

A friend sent me some links to a bunch of photographers he was researching for his class. This series in particular caught my eye. It’s reminiscent of one of my very favorite photographers, Ralph Eugene Meatyard’s series titled, The Family Album of Lucybelle Crater. Beautiful and creepy at the same time. The one below is so beautiful and still that it is very unsettling on me. Something about those evergreen hills and placid lake, pretty lady by an old house just screams out Shutter Island and murder!

home sweet home / Wish List

I’ve been shopping for house decor and accessories these past few weeks for my sister’s new house. We used up a lot of mileage, but managed to find some spectacular deals at some local thrift and vintage shops. And of course, the always reliable Ross and Marshall’s Home Goods stores did not disappoint either.  You would think the living room or entertainment room is the most important and expensive place in a house, but I beg to differ. So far, we’ve mostly been buying essentials for the kitchen, and the needs and wants just doesn’t seem to end! I think I’ve been substituting my dress shopping addiction for kitchen knick knacks.

Anyway, isn’t this hand painted drink dispenser the loveliest? It’s quite a splurge, but I think the party hostess in me is really considering getting one. And these ceramic fruit baskets remind me of those green plastic ones  that strawberries come in. My mom always bought those when I was younger.
