Las Vegas food diary

food / Life

I always get angry when I watch those food network shows where top chefs cook these delicious and amazing meals and I can only watch from behind my television screen, drooling. So I was sure I’d have to try out these celebrity chef’s restaurants when I landed in Vegas.

Friday:

Quick bites at Todd English’s P.U.B. in the Aria hotel. They specialize in a selection of carved meats and poultry. I picked the seared salmon with TE BBQ sauce and the black truffle mayo served with toasted pita bread and an assortment of pickled vegetables. And of course, I couldn’t help but order a bucket of sweet potato french fries. This the healthiest pub food I’ve had. sooo goood.

Saturday:

Taking a leaf out of Anthony Bourdain’s travel logs, we went to Bouchon for brunch on Saturday. Bourdain claims that Thomas Keller’s sister restaurant, the French Laundry is “the best restaurant in the world. Period.” So there were high expectations when I went in. I ordered a rasberry Bellini , the brunch special, lamb with polenta and the Salade Maraîchère au Chèvre Chaud, a mixed green salad with warm goat cheese and red wine vinaigrette. Del-fu*@-ing-licious. Pardon my french.

I was eying these beignets that my friend ordered. Cinnamon beignets with Nutella and jam. Amazing.

…and one last fancy dinner at Valentino’s before we left for Houston. I ordered the Bistecchina: Thin Cut Australian “Wagyu” Rib Eye Steaks Served with Arugola Salad and Sautéed Zucchini. Left my camera at the hotel, but just saying the name of the dish makes my mouth water.

Life / weekends

Welcome back to Nevada! I love traveling, but flying there is something I always apprehend. Note to self, never fly Delta again. I think I’ll stick with another airway even if it means more money next time. Anyway, I couldn’t have asked for better weather for this weekend. An average of 70 degrees all weekend makes walking around the Strip in daytime more bearable and enjoyable.

The last time I was in Vegas, was with family on our road trip to California. So this was my first time to actually exploring the Strip. I won’t deny that I was in total awe of all the building and tourist attractions, but at the same time, I kept thinking, everything looks so fake, like giant toys.

I heart escalators. Someone needs to install escalator sidewalks all over the Strip.  (for chicks who like to wear heels at night and for people like me who can’t walk past 2 blocks without tiring out.)

The Flamingo is my favorite sign.

The Gardens inside the Bellagio

picture of my Lost extravaganza outfit…stolen from Chau‘s blog

Just got back from a weekend in Vegas. A very much needed vacation for me. Will post some pics later. I’m still bummed out about the Lost and 24 shows ending, but there will always be other things to look forward to . Summerfest this weekend, spending some time with some old friends before we all go our separate ways again, and maybe a bike ride around town will be the pick-me-up I need.

architecture / inspiration

I love these colorful, looming houses in Vietnam. They’re like cute Monopoly houses stacked on top one another. My aunt has a quaint two story one in Ben Tre and the view from the top balcony is always amazing, especially in the mornings when the breeze blows  through. One day, I want to build myself one in Vietnam, or even something like Ahmad Djuhara’s home in Jakarta below. Imagine just lying in a hammock on a summer day by the door.
