Saw these beautiful photos at the NPR: Sustainability and Photography competition website. These photos by Yao Lu definitely received my vote. The scenery are actually piles of dump and waste. If I had this hung on my wall, my mom would probably not even notice the difference between these and the more traditional watercolors.

Edgar Martins is on the list of selected artists also, although, I much prefer his other series, Topologies. I know this is more in line with the theme of environmental sustainability, but the images lack the playful melancholy I find so interesting in his other works.

This is work by Jeanne Stern, an Austin-based artist. First saw her work at the Aurora Picture show during one of the class trips and fell in love with her videos instantly. Check out her website and the video, Sprout. It’s just fantastic to see these kinds of videos, especially now with all the digital technology and CGI  being used all the time in film and video. It’s very DYI but also very well-made. Will try to find one of her videos to upload soon, but in the mean time, check out her website:

In the mood for Wong Kar wai

film / inspiration

I’ve been meaning to rent Chacon Son Cinema (To Each His Own Cinema), a collection of 33 short films by 33 different directors. This one is from one of my favorite directors, Wong Kar Wai. I was told when I was first learning to make videos, that the problem most photographers might encounter when transitioning into video was the ability to compose a movie frame the way they would normally compose a photograph. I don’t think Wong Kar Wai ever had this problem. Every frame in his movies are the most beautifully composed shots I’ve ever seen. Below is one of my favorite scenes from In the Mood for Love There is another scene in the sequel, 2046, where Gong Li and Tony Leung are walking and the way that War Kar Wai films the scenes is like watching two cranes gracefully dancing around each other. It’s amazing. The scene always gets me everytime. Found this quote from a review, I thought was pretty accurately funny. “Does anyone film people walking better than this director?”

Just had the opening for HCP’s 27th Anniversary Juried Membership Exhibition this Friday. All the work look so good on the wall and Katherine Ware did a great job with her selection. I know this sounds silly, but I was tempted all night to stand by my work and eavesdrop on everyone who was looking at it. It must be one of those beginners thing. Perhaps, with more experience and more shows under my belt, I can act a little more nonchalant about having my work on the wall. Although, several people did approached me to say how much they loved my work. So I’m going to take a moment out here and do a little jig and high five myself, because even after all that has been said, I am really proud of this last series. A Series on My Mother has been a very difficult journey with many questions and doubts and some triumphs. I’m going to say it’s a good stopping point for this series. I don’t believe the work will ever end. Hopefully, like Jacobs said, one day I can pick up right where I left off and find that I have another journey to explore.

Anyway. I ramble. I’m going to be trading one of my prints with another artist from the show, so I can’t wait to take a look at her other work in her portfolio. You can check out her work here. Although, as of right now, I’m really drawn to Jockey #03 or this one

Here are some works that I found really delightful. Some are in the exhibition at HCP, and some were not accepted. I had the opportunity to put together the slideshow for all of those artists who were not accepted, and found some works that were really neat.

A very gorgeous video by Xavier Chassaing. I couldn’t tell the first time I watched, but the video is comprised of 35,000 photographs and stop motion arrangements. It’s just so seamless. I remember making a video using only photographs, but it seemed so amateur after watching this video. The projection mapping is just deliciously beautiful.
