museum day

The three of us, plus baby, spent the entire day at the MFAH last Thursday. It was my mom’s first time visiting the museum and I really wanted to check out the photography manipulation exhibit. The lighting in museums are always so ideal, especially in those vast gallery rooms with large skylights to let in all the beautiful natural light. My mom thoroughly enjoyed the museum, taking in all the beautiful religious paintings and she spent a good amount of time taking her own pictures with her smartphone. Olivia has been a huge blessing in our family and I’m really glad she’s not one of those babies that throws loud tantrums constantly. For the most part, she sleeps and wakes up and cries a bit when she needs feeding or changing. She had a good long nap in the car ride and when she woke up, she found herself in a great room with tall paintings guilded in gold frames and light shining through the windows from the ceiling. And as she’s beginning to show improvement in her eyesight, it’s so cute to see her take in all the beautiful new surroundings around her. See picture below for one of my favorite expressions of hers.

Houston / Life

It’s rare to have both my mom and sister off at the same time and as we grow older, its even more difficult to spend quality time together. So, as my sister is on maternity leave and my mom on a working hiatus to help with the baby, the three of us, plus babe, took a trip out to Richmond to visit our friend’s new doughnut and deli  shop. The Grove is a quaint little spot run by our friends, Renda and Tam. If you’re driving there, you’ll pass a cornfield and a row of beautiful oak trees lining a small road. Inside, the walls are filled with eclectic, retro-inspired posters and graphics. The display counter is often filled with an assortment of colorful, shiny, glazed doughnuts, topped with everything you ever wanted when you were a kid, from cocoa puffs to rich brown caramels,  sweet strawberry glazes, bacon and maple, and  even some filled with s’mores. Renda and Tam are always Instagramming their latest concoction of flavors and it is so tempting not to drive down to Richmond for a quick bite. When we visited, Renda made us her Cha-mango and it was so a m a z i ng ! I’m a big mango and tamarind lover, and this drink was probably one of the best thing I’ve ever tasted. The Cha-mango consists of a slurry of fresh mangoes topped with chunks of sweet mango with pieces of spicy and sour tamarind and chamoy on top. I will definitely have to make more trips out to grab another cup, or two.

The lesson learned after having a baby, is that when you go shopping, you no longer have the need to buy anything for yourself anymore, because buying baby clothes is so much more addictive. We spent a good majority of our shopping time in baby stores, oohing and ahhing over baby fashion before picking up a few accessories for Olivia.

Life / Parties / Phamily / weekends

I’ve been hanging around my sister’s house lately, trying to get lots of one on one time with the new baby before summer ends and school starts. We celebrated Olivia’s big 1 month with a party for our family. The grandparents cooked up a storm of delicious food last Saturday for their new favorite kid. Similarly to American baby showers, a Vietnamese one month party celebrates the birth of a newborn into the family. After recuperating for a month on a pretty strict meat and rice diet, my sister was finally able to share baby Olivia with the rest of the family in a celebration of roasted pig, Vietnamese desserts and rice plates. My mom handmade the traditional orange sticky rice and a Vietnamese dessert of sesame and mung beans. My dad made his awesome curry, of course, and a stir fried noodles. I’m still recovering from a food coma and the leftovers are not really helping either, but I’m not complaining, for sure! I can’t believe it’s almost the end of July already. Two more weeks of fun and then it’s back to lesson planning. I’ve been putting off work lately since the baby arrived, but have been getting into a good work flow as of late, getting things done in the mornings and relaxing and catching up with TV show marathons in the evenings. Looking forward to going to the museum this week and two art  workshops next week! …

dining out / Life

The past few days have been spent in celebration with friends. I stopped by Myth & Symbol on Friday to enjoy drinks and sweets in celebration of their first year anniversary. It’s hard to believe that only last year, we were all standing in the same place celebrating the grand opening of my friends’ new endeavors. Monday night was spent having a good, long dinner with a few close ones, catching up and sharing delicious plates at Downhouse. It’s always a difficult thing to get everyone on the same schedule, but once in a while, its always great to know a few good friends can be just a text or phone call away.

Cats

The little polydactyl kitten that my sister rescued from a grocery parking lot has been enjoying its new life. When she’s not too busy chasing Charlie (the other cat) around the house, she likes to lounge around on the sofas with her long, wispy tail, swinging ever so delicately about.
