weekends

This has been a fast week. A teaching opportunity had opened up at my old junior high school. I didn’t expect to land this teaching job so soon, but I’m so glad I got it. The kids are so eager to finally experiment with clay and acrylics after having three months with a substitute with no training in the fine arts. I should feel so lucky to have such enthusiastic students. Well, we’ll see after a few weeks anyway. 🙂

I’m enjoying this four day weekend with lots of food and family and sleeping in and taking my time to do my own things.  A quick scouting trip for PATT with the sis today led us to the Cooley house, where we were so graciously invited to a Louisiana crawfish party. sweeeet.  Then a bit of shopping and chilling on the lawn near Mam’s. Root beer and sour cherry is my new favorite combination thus far. A quick stop at Kaboom‘s before closing time and I picked up this sweet edition of Kathy Kollwitz drawings and prints that will make awesome scans for future charcoal lessons.

I managed to fit in a museum day with a few of the students on the last day of our spring break. Since the school is so far on the north side of town, it’s rare for the art students to get a chance to visit all the diverse museums and galleries near downtown. We did a little museum hopping on Friday and visited about half a dozed places, though most of the day was spent oohing and ahhing at the Menil, of course. There were some amazing photography exhibitions on display in lieu of Fotofest’s Biennial happening at the same time. I have yet to have another chance to visit more of these Fotofest exhibitions, hopefully sometime next weekend.

The photographs by Priya Kambli were a few of my favorites. The colors are so vibrant and the diptych of personal photographs and cultural references to textile and patterns and motifs were so beautifully well-composed. My photos are not doing them any justice right now.

Life

I told myself when I started teaching that I’ll always try to keep up with my social life as much as I can, especially with all my time and energy being spent on so much of my work life these days with classes and with the new photography company. So Monday night was spent watching Fun. perform at Warehouse and quick reunion with familiar faces was definitely a good way to start off the week. The weather was so amazing after the thunderstorm on Tuesday that a couple of friends and I decided to make the best of it and chill outdoors at Torchy‘s with delicious tacos on Wednesday evening. A quick bite at Ruggles afterwards for our favorite white chocolate bread pudding and then we grabbed a few beers at the bar. I swear, this is the best bread pudding in town! It’s back to work this weekend, though. Another photo shoot scheduled and lots and lots of photo editing for me, and then hopefully, a relaxing getaway at the beach next weekend!
